1876 Centennial Home Insurance Co. Calendar Philadelphia World's Fair Exposition!
This wonderful approximate 5¼" x 7½" calender was printed by Kronheim & Co, Dey St., New York, USA utilizing the Baxter process. German born Joseph Martin Kronheim (1810-1896) was a lithographer and wood engraver. During his years residing in Edinburgh, he worked with George Baxter (1804-1867) an English artist and printer credited with inventing commercially viable colour printing utilizing zinc instead of wood blocks. Renown for their biblical prints, they were producing over 1000 different prints by 1855 some of which specifically for the 1855 Paris Exposition Universelle. After the exhibition, Kronheim sold his share of the business and retired to Germany where he attempted to set up other printing business, including the American one.
Although printed for Centennial Home Insurance Company, the calender was specifically directed towards the 1876 Centennial Exposition (World's Fair) in Philadelphia. The calendar features color lithographs of different monumental events in the colonies war if independence on the front with details of the event on the back. The last two pages are summary monthly calenders for 1876 and 1877 on the front with images of two different buildings from The Exposition ion the back.
Some of the individual leafs of the calender have torn through their connecting hole to the ring at the top. All pages are there and each is in very good condition other than the tear through at the ring.
